Encoder Failures: MagStripe, Smart Card, and Contactless
Encoder issues split cleanly between configuration problems and hardware failure. Here's how to tell which one you have.
Magnetic stripe encoders
Magstripe encoding failures are usually one of three things — wrong coercivity setting in the driver (HiCo vs LoCo), worn magnetic head, or off-spec card stock. A bench test isolates the cause in minutes.
Contact smart card encoders
Contact encoders fail mechanically — the pogo pins that touch the smart card chip wear out. Replacement is straightforward on most platforms.
Contactless / RFID encoders
Contactless encoder failures are almost always module-level — the RFID antenna and controller board are typically replaced as one unit. Driver configuration and middleware (e.g. PC/SC) must also be verified.
