Faded or Streaked ID Cards: Causes and Fixes

Streaks, washed-out colors, and uneven density almost always trace back to one of three components. Here's how to diagnose and resolve them.

Printhead wear

Vertical white lines or missing colors in a fixed position indicate burned-out heating elements on the printhead. Printheads are consumables — typical life is 25,000–50,000 cards on direct-to-card printers like the Zebra ZC350 or Fargo DTC4500e.

Replacement and thermal recalibration is a 30–60 minute lab procedure.

Ribbon path contamination

Adhesive residue, dust, or fragments of old ribbon stuck to the platen roller cause horizontal streaks and density variation. Cleaning the platen roller and ribbon path with an OEM cleaning kit resolves most cases.

Color calibration drift

Overall washed-out output with no banding is usually color density drift. Run the printer's calibration routine, then verify ICC profile in the driver matches the ribbon type.
